Biu local government area, Borno state
21st -26th may 2018.
The Biu general hospital was the
venue for the presidential committee on north east initiative (PCNI) and Pro-health
international (PHI) joint one week free medical outreach for the less
privileged.
Upon arrival, you notice the
different security bodies operating within and around the hospital premises to
ensure a peaceful outreach. Volunteers were in excess (first time) as we had
the Nigerian Red Cross numbering about 55, the Hisbah group numbering 68, the
civilian JTF numbering 8 civil defence, police and a Nigerian army detail.
Monday rolled around and work started
in earnest. It got more stressful by the day as more people started to turn in,
military personnel trying to cut in queue, touts hustling cards so as to make quick
cash, you know, the factors that we can barely control but at the end of the
day, it was a week well spent. What stood out for me was the state of the art haematology
lab/ blood bank (my relaxation spot during afternoon break). Power situation
was the most impressive as there was light throughout our stay thanks to the
solar plant that powers the hospital (including air conditioners and
autoclaves). That is no small feat! Kudos to the Borno state government for
that.
Testimonies from patients that
underwent various treatments like thyroid surgery, caesarean section, cataract
extraction, tooth extraction and fitting of artificial one and so forth is
rewarding enough to know that you aren't wasting your time but helping
humanity.
Special thanks to Doctor Iko
Ibanga, the founder of Pro – health for creating such a medium where people can
volunteer to help the less privilege.
The presidential committee on
north east initiative for sponsoring such an outreach
